Analysis of 89 dead lifetime deals shows 12% failed not by shutdown but by the company revoking or downgrading the license while still operating. 81% were outright shutdowns, and only 2% ended with open-sourced code. 2024 was the deadliest year, accounting for 58% of dated failures.
