Microsoft Confirms Windows Tracking ID That Can't Be Disabled

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a persistent per-device identifier called GDID that cannot be turned off through any standard interface. The identifier surfaced in a federal criminal complaint against a hacker whose VPN did not prevent Microsoft from tracking his device. GDID survives Windows updates and is tied to Microsoft Account sign-in, with no consumer-facing setting to disable it.
