GitHub Makes 2FA Mandatory for All Contributors by September 2026
GitHub will require two-factor authentication (2FA) for all eligible contributors starting September 2, 2026. Users who already have 2FA enabled will not be able to disable it after that date. The move aims to strengthen software supply chain security across the platform.

While mandatory 2FA is a positive step, the three-year rollout window suggests GitHub expects significant pushback or technical hurdles from its massive user base.
