AI Deciphers First Herculaneum Scroll Buried by Vesuvius
An AI system has successfully read text from a carbonized Herculaneum scroll, buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The scroll, part of the only surviving library from antiquity, was unreadable for centuries. Researchers used machine learning to detect ink and reveal Greek writing, opening access to hundreds more scrolls.
