Three useful queries. First, before accepting an offer: punch in the role, level, city, and employer type. If the offer is more than 20% below the median shown here, you have grounds to negotiate or walk. Second, before asking for a raise: compare your current package to what your role would earn at a different employer type. Third, before changing employer type entirely (e.g., local startup to US-remote): the comparison panel shows you the realistic delta.

The big secret of Pakistani tech compensation

Most Pakistani engineers are underpaid not because Pakistan-based companies pay poorly, but because they accept the first offer without benchmarking. Salaries in Pakistan tech move 30-50% year-over-year for engineers who switch employers; they move 8-12% for engineers who stay. Switching is the leverage.

The second-order effect: employers expect you to negotiate. A company that offers PKR 350,000 is typically authorised up to PKR 420,000 for the same candidate. Not negotiating leaves the difference on the table.

What's the average software engineer salary in Pakistan in 2026?

It depends heavily on level and employer. A mid-level backend engineer (2-5 years) at a Pakistani startup earns around PKR 270,000 per month gross. The same engineer at a Pakistan office of a multinational (Afiniti, Visa, BoA) earns roughly PKR 420,000. A US-remote engineer at the same level can clear PKR 650,000+. Senior engineers (5-8 years) earn 1.5-2x these figures.

Local startup vs MNC vs US-remote — which actually pays best?

US-remote is the highest cash figure for most roles, often 2-2.5x a local startup salary. MNCs (Afiniti, Systems, NETSOL, Visa Pakistan) sit in the middle and offer better benefits and stability. Local startups pay less in cash but often offer equity, which can be the highest expected-value option if the company exits. Freelance is unpredictable: top freelancers out-earn US-remote, median freelancers earn less than local startups.

How does the tax work?

For local employment (startup, MNC office, enterprise), you pay standard FBR income tax slabs. For US-remote or freelance income received via banking channels, you can qualify for Section 154A's 0.25% flat rate if PSEB-registered and on the Active Taxpayer List. Do these numbers include bonus and equity?

No. Figures are base salary only. Bonus typically adds 10-20% to total cash at local employers, sometimes 25-40% at US-remote roles. Equity is highly variable: at a Pakistani Series A startup it's often 0.1-0.5% over 4 years; at US-remote roles it's typically 0.01-0.05% but the underlying company is more valuable. Treat the calculator as the salary floor.
