Users Only Whitelist 4 Notification Types, 60-App Study Finds
Interviews with 60 users reveal they only tolerate four notification categories: personal interactions, explicit reminders, expected transactions, and trusted time-critical alerts. All other types—promos, recommendations, re-engagement—get muted within two weeks. Per-category in-app consent boosted opt-in from 41% to 73% and cut 30-day mute rate from 34% to 9%.

The study suggests most apps optimize the wrong variable by focusing on copy rather than category, but the small sample size limits generalizability.
