MIT Deploys 500+ AI Surveillance Cameras Across Campus

MIT is spending over $3 million on more than 500 AI-powered surveillance cameras in academic buildings, residence halls, and outdoor areas. The cameras can collect real-time face and object classification data, including detection of motion, loitering, crowds, face masks, and gender/age classification up to 35 feet. Data is retained up to 30 days unless an exception is granted, raising privacy concerns.
