Apple's container runtime runs 14 of 29 Docker Compose projects unmodified
Apple's new container runtime, which uses a lightweight per-container VM, idles at ~58 MB vs Docker Desktop's 7.8 GB. Testing 29 real docker-compose projects found 14 ran as-is, 4 needed one-line fixes, and 11 failed due to upstream issues or design limitations. The runtime is compatible enough for many multi-service dev stacks on macOS 26.
Meridian48 take
The results are promising for developers seeking a lighter alternative, but the 11 failures highlight gaps in networking and Linux-specific features that limit production readiness.
