AI coding agents still need structural maps despite model upgrades
A benchmark on 13 Ruby repos found that even top models like Claude Opus 4.8 missed 9 of 11 scattered dependents without a code map, but caught 11 of 11 with it. The same lift appeared across five models from different labs, including GPT-5.5. The gap between computed facts and inferred guesses is a difference of kind, not quality.

The piece convincingly argues that structural indexes are not temporary crutches but permanent necessities, challenging the assumption that bigger models alone will solve code comprehension.
